The Name of the Tree

An African Bantu tale about very hungry animals & fruit that is much too high to reach.
In order to get the fruit the animals must learn its name & the Great Lion Queen is the only one who knows it!

Jason designed the set, which involved a 16 foot wide shadowpuppet screen, a pair of bamboo/palm trees,
and a mechanical fruit tree which had to grow and shrink onstage!

In this scene, Kate Ann Vandermeer is playing the Giraffe,
Leslie Takeda is playing the Turtle
and Sedina Fiati is playing the Zebra.


The stunningly realistic animal masks were designed by
Pamela Schuller, whose website is 
stonemasque.com.


And that very wonderful song "Ungali" was written by Kirk Elliott.

The fabric tree-trunk  and the fabric leaf-canopy is attached to the "transport" which is pulled by the actors using the rope.
